Craftsmanship
Today, our textiles are made the same way d.d. And Leslie Tillett made them in 1946—entirely by hand. We mix custom colors and using silk screens or drag boxes, a Tillett innovation, we print on various fabrics from linens and cottons to blends and silks. There is artistry in the application: only the hand can moderate the dialog between fabric and ink. Customization down to the tiniest detail is our calling card; it is at the core of Tillett Textiles.
About Us
Before clients like Billy Baldwin, Albert Hadley, Babe Paley, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis discovered Tillett, the British-born Tillett brothers were printing fabrics in Cuernavaca, where their work caught the attention of the legendary Alexey Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar. He sent d.d. Tillett to profile the brothers, and she soon fell in love with Leslie Tillett. Together they founded Tillett in 1946 and moved to the Upper East Side, living above their brownstone boutique and custom screen-printing atelier. There, the pair pioneered techniques such as drag box, wax resist, layering, and transparent inks to create painterly hand-printed fabrics prized by stylish clients.
Their innovative methods were demonstrated at schools including FIT and Skidmore College, and their work entered the collections of museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
Today, the Tillett tradition continues at its studio in New Jersey, where expressive hand-printed textiles are still created with a philosophy rooted in nature, imperfection, and the artistry of the handmade.
